Rhythms of Manipur

RHYTHMS OF MANIPUR AND NSSO TAKE US BEYOND BORDERS

The Ministry of Community Development, Culture and the Arts and the High Commission of India present “Rhythms of Manipur” at the Central Bank Auditorium on Monday December 11th, 2017 at 7pm.

The concert features the Rhythms of Manipur Company from India and the National Steel Symphony Orchestra of Trinidad and Tobago (NSSO).  This initiative between the Government of Trinidad and Tobago and India is aimed at promoting cultural exchanges between the two nations, encouraging awareness and appreciation of India’s cultural heritage and creating opportunities for future artistic and cultural collaborations.

Established in 1985, The Rhythms of Manipur Company is a performing arts group with expertise in traditional and fusion arts, and is an important centre of Manipur music and theatre.  For the past three decades, Rhythms of Manipur has been involved in the revival of rare performing arts of the Indian region. Additionally, it has performed in several countries including Singapore and Hong Kong with performances at the 9th Delhi International Arts Festival in 2013, the India International Trade Fair in 2015 and the Manipur Sangai Festival.

Joining the performing arts group will be the National Steel Symphony Orchestra of Trinidad and Tobago, recognized for its musical excellence in the steelpan movement. The Orchestra uses the Genesis pans (G-pans) which is one of the latest innovations in steelpan technology.  NSSO has performed locally, regionally and internationally.

Some of the collaborations between NSSO and the Republic of India include: the concert ‘Drums of India’ at Naparima Bowl in 2012, concert with Ms. Indira Naik and her ensemble in October 2014 and others.

These collaborations resulted in expanding the musical possibilities of the steelpan and creating opportunities for local musicians to develop their musicianship and engage in healthy cross cultural exchange.

Admission for this event is free but ticketed. Tickets will be distributed on Thursday 7th December at the Central Bank Auditorium Box Office between the hours of 12 – 6 pm. For more information call 225-4030 extension 4030.
