“Treasures from the Hideaway” — Something for your Carnival 2016 calendar
Dr. Slinger Francisco is known most widely and affectionately as “The Mighty Sparrow.” A cultural icon of Trinidad & Tobago and one of our greatest performers, his personal collection of memorabilia is a living legacy of the numerous accomplishments and distinctions his musical greatness has earned. This impressive collection has been acquired by the Research Unit of Culture Division, restructured and organized into an elegant and educational display on the 2nd Floor of the Culture Division Building at Frederick Street in Port of Spain.
The scope of this interactive presentation offers various gems, from numerous Sparrow photos and posters, to tangible elements like plaques, trophies and medals.
The result is a fully interactive, multi-media exhibition which touches upon the life a champion who has influenced our Calypso like none other, creating a full on experience of the Sparrow as few would have felt before. Under the supervision of the Heritage Preservation and Research Unit, this project was launched in February 2015 and is free and open to the public.
During 2015, in addition to visitors from the general public, many camps, school groups and special guests, such as culture officials from Grenada and Barbados and staff from Tobago’s Community Development Ministry, visited the exhibition.
The first group visit for 2016 was an excited group of youngsters from the Brynn Mawr Primary School on Wednesday 27th January. Here are a few images from their visit.
A visit to “Treasures from the Hideaway” is a must when putting together your final Carnival 2016 schedule. The Culture Division looks forward to welcoming each and everyone of our visitors to this special exhibition. For information on making group bookings contact us at (868) 623 8945.
