Cultural and Technical Camps

The Cultural Camps seek to build communities and create Cultural Legacies by providing meaningful, developmental activity for young persons. This serves as a platform where they can develop enhanced Artistic skills along with cultural awareness and pride in the community. The programme is open to arts groups, cultural organizations, community groups, umbrella bodies, schools and vacation camps that have a history of executing camps, arts education, community work and working with children. These organizations must show evidence of their capacity to provide a secure venue, learning aids/teaching materials, tutors, a camp manager, counsellors and the ability to determine the programme in consultation with the Ministry’s coordinator. From 2013-2016, the programme has staged a total number of 197 camps, with 8,843 participants.

Cultural Camps focuses on shaping the cultural citizen of Trinidad and Tobago by teaching them basic artistic skills, and introducing them to aspects of our culture such as landscapes, festivals and personality. Additionally, the Cultural Camps specifically target children between the ages of 9-12 years old. Technical Camps focus on the crafting of technical or entrepreneurial skills such as jewelry making, visual arts, fashion, music production and music management, hair and makeup for stage, technical theatre, script and screen writing, Carnival arts, literary arts, and musician craftsmanship. It also caters to adults who are willing to learn a particular skill and have the desire to eventually venture into entrepreneurship. Participants pay no cover charge.

Camps have been conducted all across Trinidad and Tobago and the Ministry, alongside other organizations, began a collaborative process that provides venues for the programs as well as venue management. These camps are seen as an opportunity to reinvent and reinvigorate students by enlightenment of the culture of Trinidad and Tobago. For 2017, Cultural Camps are being conducted at nineteen locations, and Technical Camps at eleven locations during the months of July-August.
